Please do not be fooled by unscrupulous and lazy dealers, buying a cheap or indeed expensive alternative using either manually operated or with plug in timers -- WILL NOT achieve the running costs these products are capable of. Many in the market prey on the real achievements of these products and offer cheap solutions such as plug in timers. Fact --- whatever system you use be it gas oil lpg etc. Switching your heating on and off for a short period in the morning and then again for a longer period in front of the telly during the evening is --- "penny wise pound foolish" This is likely to cost you MORE than if you approached the subject in the correct manner. You will see my own property where I measured four rooms, each radiator month in month out for over a year. One room was a portacabin which played the part of a badly insulated room. The average running cost came to around 1p per hour. Not bad! Costs to rival even a gas system......... We had the heating on 365 days/24 hours per day --- Why? Well each radiator is on a thermostat no need to turn it off in the summer --- it turns itself off!!! Better still we could have each room at a different temperature, and each room with a comfort temperature specified for the times we would be in the house or room and a background or lower temperature whilst out at work or asleep (4 degrees drop say the men in white coats). With ANY system the vast amount of energy used is getting the room up to temperature once that is achieved significantly less is used maintaining the temperature. So to switch on and off is literally wasting your money. Please DON'T do it! Imagine you spent good money getting the room to temperature, only to throw that money away and start all over again in the evening, had you left it running not only would the system be operating at peak efficiency it also warms the fabric of the building hence significantly lowering the running costs.
